The Basics…

Tulane University students have the exceptional opportunity to study at one of the many prestigious universities in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, or Wales. Students of Architecture, Engineering, and the Liberal Arts and Sciences study in the UK, making it the most popular program at Tulane’s Center for International Studies (CIS). Study for a year or semester - the choice of institution is up to you. Below are just some of the universities that welcome applicants from Tulane:

~ These universities have high rejection rates; students who wish to apply to Imperial College or Oxford University are advised to indicate an alternate site in the UK or Ireland on their application.

Participate in a CIS site-selection workshop to determine which university is right for you. Whichever UK site you choose, courses, grades, and credits travel back with you to Tulane when you participate in a Tulane Study Abroad Program (TSAP).

When Can I Go?

Academic calendars in Great Britain vary widely so check the university’s website for the most accurate information. Below is a general guide. Note that universities with trimesters usually have substantial breaks and annual exams.

Where Do I Live?

Students arrange their housing directly with the university abroad. The vast majority of Tulane students in the UK live in dormitories. Because of the difficulty of finding student housing in London, students who choose a university in this city should be prepared for the possibility of living in apartments and/or traveling long distances to class. Check the university’s website for details on housing available to study-abroad students.

What Are The Costs?

Studying abroad is affordable. Costs vary by program and student lifestyle. Because students on TSAPs pay Tulane University tuition for their studies abroad, most Tulane and federal financial aid applies. Below is an average of the per-semester cost for the 2005-06 year to help you with your budgeting (based on the conversion rate of $1 = £ .55):

Living Costs* (Semester)
Total Estimated Semester Cost
UK
$16,075
$8,000 - $10,425
$24,075 - $26,500

~ The cost of Tulane tuition for 2006-07 has yet to be determined. For all TSAPs, students are billed through Tulane for tuition and the Academic Support Service Fee in addition to the required International Emergency Evacuation Insurance. ( Oxford University housing is also billed through Tulane.) Students pay all other costs directly as they occur.

* Living costs vary widely and include housing, meals, books, round-trip airfare from New Orleans, health and evacuation insurance, passport, visa, and personal expenses. They do not include vacation travel. Note that the cost of living in London is exceptionally high.

Students on academic, disciplinary, or honor board probation may apply but are not eligible to participate until their records are reviewed.

What Are The Costs?

How Do I Apply?

Begin the process well in advance of the year or semester you plan to study abroad. Aside from Regent’s College applicants, students interested in TSAP UK are required to attend a site-selection meeting before submitting their TSAP application. Visit the CIS early in fall semester to sign up for one of the available meeting times.

After attending the site selection meeting and choosing an appropriate host institution, submit your online TSAP application by the appropriate deadline:

Spring Semester
(see above for limited university options)
May 1st (previous year)

Fall Semester

Spring semester

Some programs fill up before the deadline so you are strongly advised to submit your application early to increase your chances of being accepted.

A complete application includes a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation from Tulane faculty, one photo and a $50 non-refundable deposit. Indicate on your form the British university that you have selected ( Oxford University and Imperial College applicants should also list a second-choice institution). Late or incomplete applications will be rejected.

Upon conditional acceptance from the CIS, you will submit an application to the host program abroad. Final acceptance to study abroad is contingent upon this application and your ability to maintain the above eligibility requirements through the semester before departure.
